Gone are the days where you look in a newspaper, see an ad for a job, call the company and schedule an interview. It seems like most hiring is done online today by way of job boards and social media sites. The next most popular thing is word-of-mouth referrals that will get you a job interview.

Back when you would use the newspaper for job searching, the interview method was pretty straight forward too.  You walked in, introduced yourself and usually chatted with an owner or the manager. Then companies felt the need to get more layers in there such as a HR person. So you might have found yourself interviewing with 3 or 4 people before you were awarded the job or passed on.

And today, it is even more complicated. Because everyone has so much going on today, businesses have found other ways to interview. This means that today’s candidates need to be prepared for whatever interview method or technique comes their way. This doesn’t mean you’re one interview and done either. You may still have to go through several before a decision is made.

Here we’re going to cover a few of the most popular that Clear Choice Staffing Solutions has been a part of or have been told about by our employees. How effective are they? Well, you’d have to ask the loans poor credit employer that uses them:

The Screening Interview

When a company has received a massive amount of applicants, they will use the Screening Interview to eliminate a big part of them. This method of interview is meant to “weed out” the most apparent un-fit for the job at hand and they are often performed by phone. They are very short and focused on the candidate’s basic qualifications.

Actual Phone Interviews

In addition to screening interviews being conducted by phone, some companies actually do the official interview by phone too. This is done when geographical differences are in the way, either on the end of the candidate or the interviewing manager. This type of interview is more detailed and will take longer. Some things you should know about phone interviews:

  1. Be well prepared
  2. Always conduct it on your end in a quiet location with no interruptions
  3. If at all possible, do not use your cell phone to avoid a dropped call
  4. Do not drink or eat, surf the internet or send text messages during the interview

Many times, phone interviews aren’t scheduled. However, if the caller reached you at an inconvenient time, simply ask to reschedule. Don’t try to force it to work, because it probably won’t.

Personal Interviews

The Panel Interview

Full Day Interviews

Some companies will schedule you to interview with a list of people throughout the day in this type of interview. They are usually back to back with a break for lunch. You may even have a lunch interview, which we discuss next. For the candidate, this type of interview is exhausting mentally and physically. It is almost as tiring as the first day on a new job! The Virtual Interview

Many companies are going this route as an elimination interview. It is called digital interviewing and enables the employer to perform an efficient, fair and structured interview. This type of interview is used when geography is an issue.

The multiple interview styles are as various as the jobs you’re applying for and as diverse as the companies themselves are. What you should keep in mind is if you are asked back, then you are getting closer to the decision being made.
